BIOGRAPHY
Phuzushukela also known as John Bhengu is a famous maskandi artist. He is known as the first rural artist in South Africa to achieve popularity. He is good in Vocal and guitar. He was born and raised in Nkandla in Southern Zululand, South Africa. He is good in guitar and plays well with it.
CAREER
Phuzushukela’s career started at an early stage. He has developed great interest in music and loves Zulu custom and tradition. He also respects Zulu custom and tradition. He moved to Durban in the late 1940s, where he participated in street music competitions and gained some local recognition. He is greatly loved by maskandi population. Phuzushukela would evaluate these unofficial gatherings based on the musician’s ability to create and utilize ability in the izihlabo, as well as how well they incorporated a traditional tune with guitar. He is greatly supported by his family and friend. He made himself famous and love by maskandi Fans.
Around 1955, while visiting Johannesburg, Phuzushukela connected with producer Cuthbert Mathumba and collaborated with Troubadour Records (David Coplan) to record his debut song, Ilanga Libalela (also known as “The Blazing Sun”). According to Allingham, Bhengu relocated to Trutone in 1968 following Mathumba’s passing. He briefly collaborated with producer Cambridge Matiwane, who could have helped him land a supporting band, which was a significant shift for maskanda music at the time.
