Juluka was one of south africa best band in those days. The band had a strong connection to the independence struggle. The band was greatly amazing and had gone to different countries for performance.
The team comprises of Johnny Clegg who is a well known and talented musical artist. The South African artist Johnny Clegg was brought up in his own country after being born in England. Because of his creative, racially merged musical cooperation, he was referred to as the “WhiteZulu”.
They launched their first song, “Woza Friday,” in 1976. Three years later after their first song, they published another song titled Universal Men, a well regarded album.
The lyrical lyrics of the album were heavily influenced by PabloNeruda, Jean-PaulSartre, and John Berger’s A Seventh Man. African Litany, their second album, was released in late 1981 after they had grown to a quintet. With its aggressively political lyrics commemorating the Zulus’ victory over the colonial British army at the Battle of Isandlwana, the album’s first song, “Impi,” was banned by South African radio but went on to become a secret smash.
In modern South Africa, national sports teams are frequently linked to it. Their first worldwide recognition came from the record, and in 1982 and 1983 they had been able to embark on concerts both Europe and North America with success.
The Musicians Union, however, first barred them because “since it couldn’t be feasible to authorize one of the many bands to operate in South Africa, there is no possibility of an exchange,” according to a June 1983 article in the British music magazine NME. After the restriction was subsequently removed, the group donated their expenses to a worthy cause.
Another team member is The Zulu language, traditional music, and dancing forms were taught to Clegg by Sipho Mchunu, a Zulu street musician and migrant laborer in Johannesburg.
The team name was originated from the Zulu word “ZULU” which means sweet. Additionally, Mchunu possessed a bull by that name. The source of the band’s name was the idea of the both individuals.
During their collaboration, the band released its first debut album in the year 1979. The band got separated in the year 1986. It happened when Mchunu made the decision to go back home to care for his family and seek a career on his own.
Clegg later recorded as a solo artist and formed other bands, such as Savuka. The South African Police occasionally looked into him since he was a well-known white person in the anti-apartheid movement. In 2019, Clegg later passed away after a brief illness
